Port Aransas
Short-term rentals (any rental of a dwelling for less than 30 consecutive days) are legal in Port Aransas but require an annual STR registration/permit from the city (Code of Ordinances ch. 12, art. VIII, Ordinance No. 2022-02), obtained online via portaransas.munirevs.com, with a mandatory inspection at registration and each renewal. Daily and weekly rentals are permitted only in areas zoned R-2 or higher. The 2026 registration fee is $200/calendar year for an efficiency or 1-bedroom plus $100 for each additional bedroom (hotels $20/room, $1,000 cap), not pro-rated and expiring Dec. 31. The combined lodging tax is 15% (9% city Hotel/Motel Occupancy Tax remitted monthly to the city via MuniRevs, plus the 6% Texas state HOT); the city warns that Airbnb and VRBO do NOT collect or remit the city tax. Occupancy is capped at 2 persons per sleeping room plus 4 per dwelling (plus 6 for homes over 3,250 sq ft), and violations are Class C misdemeanors up to $500/day ($2,000 for fire/zoning/health/sanitation offenses).

- Fines
- A violation is a Class C misdemeanor punishable by a fine up to $500.00 per offense, with each day a separate offense; for offenses governing fire safety, zoning, public health and sanitation the maximum is $2,000.00. A permit may be denied, suspended, or revoked for three (3) or more notices of violation within a twelve-month period, for false application information, operating without a valid permit, or tax/fee delinquency.
- Notes
- The city inspects STRs at registration and renewal and operates a complaint hotline (361-333-5659) with a 60-minute response protocol. A visual inspection by a code/building/fire/police officer revealing occupancy above the registered limit is prima facie evidence of a violation. Advertising a non-compliant unit is prima facie evidence of a violation. A dedicated Short-Term Rental Specialist administers the program.
